EUROPEAN AIRLINES MAY OFFER 5G SOON
The European Commission is going to make it possible for passengers to use 5G on board aircraft. The Commission will designate certain frequencies for in-flight mobile telephone connections. This would allow passengers to call, text and use the internet, just as they can do on the ground.
Thierry Breton, the European Commissioner for the Internal Market, summarizes the legislative amendment announced today nicely. According to him, “the sky is no longer the limit” when it comes to the possibilities to offer super-fast connectivity with high capacity.
The 5G coverage is made possible by equipping the cabin with a so-called ‘pico cell’.
Via this network, passengers can use the telephone services that are sent to the ground via satellite.
