Tram naar Denia

The Valencian Railways are starting test runs of the train, now TRAM, between Gata de Gorgos and Denia and the final connection is expected to follow at the end of this year or early next year. On July 27, 2016, the last trenet entered the capital of the Marina Alta. Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat Valenciana (FGV) then announced the renewal of the line and the journeys were made by bus. Six years later, the time has come. You can take the train from Alicante to Denia again, although it is still with a transfer in Benidorm.

Now it is no longer a ‘trenet’, but line 9 of the TRAM. For many drivers it will take some getting used to, because the barriers in La Xara, Joan Fuster and Metge Manuel Vallalta will go down again when the tram passes. The drivers are no longer used to this and the police will be on site for the first few weeks to keep an eye on things.

That transfer in Benidorm is still necessary, because some bridges are not yet suitable for the new cars. In the meantime, work has started on the new bridge over the bed of Quisi in Benissa, a length of 300 meters that must be bridged. It will therefore take a while before the new vehicles will also drive between Benidorm and Denia, but everything will finally be on its feet.

But everything seems to go much further. The central government has pushed aside the plan of the ‘Tren de la Costa’, the coastal train. The Valencian government has not given up after that and President Ximo Puig has now announced that the Valencian government will itself carry out the train connection between Denia and Valencia. This will be done by extending the line of TRAM 9, now from Alicante to Denia. This connection will then be extended to Gandía, where you can transfer directly to the train to Valencia at the station.

The project is currently about 150 million euros to bridge these 29 kilometers.
