It is not the first time and residents of the area fear it will not be the last time that the polluted water in the Mar Menor lagoon has resulted in thousands of dead fish and shrimp washed up. Everything points to a repeat of a similar ecological phenomenon from two years ago, but authorities rule out a new period of anoxia pollution.

The SOS Mar Menor platform warns about the eutrophication of the water because the quality of the water has worsened in recent weeks due to the high temperatures and absence of wind. The undesired excess of nutrients is called eutrophication and leads to explosive algae growth, resulting in a lack of oxygen and fish death.

The dead fish found on several beaches in the Mar Menor are the smallest species and most sensitive to changes in the water. Due to the climatic conditions there is less oxygen in the lagoon of the Mar Menor.

However, the platform SOS Mar Menor warns because just like in 2019, the process has now started in the Cala del Pino followed by the Mar de Cristal and Islas Menores and then Los Nietos. Over the past weekend, dead fish and jumping shrimp were found in several places. Fishermen also warn that there are almost no fish left in the middle of the lagoon.
